Biography
António da Costa Basto has practised as a lawyer since 1975, is an expert in personal injury law and regularly assists international courts by providing evidence on legal procedures in Portugal and the amount of damages that injury victims can obtain under Portuguese law.
Lawyer da Costa Basto focuses on civil liability, personal injury and insurance, acting both on behalf of insurers and injured parties.
Since 1986, he has been a legal advisor and lawyer for Portuguese and foreign insurance companies based in Portugal and abroad.
In addition, lawyer Antonio da Costa Basto is a legal consultant and lawyer in matters involving foreign nationals.
Since 1994, he has worked with several English law firms in both Portuguese and English jurisdiction cases, as a legal consultant and expert, occasionally appearing in English courts to advise on Portuguese law.
Lawyer Antonio da Costa Basto was a legal advisor to ASEP - Associação Portuguesa dos Seguradores Privados (Portuguese Association of Private Insurers) until its integration into APS - Associação Portuguesa de Seguradores (Portuguese Association of Insurers) and occasionally collaborated with the latter.
He has organised and held conferences and debates (some on TV and radio) on medical malpractice, and personal injury assessment and compensation.
He was a member of AIJA - Association Internationale des Jeunes Avocats (International Association of Young Lawyers). As a member of this association, he was a speaker for Portugal on the topic 'Legal Protection Insurance' at the 1984 AIJA Congress in Bordeaux, France.
Lawyer Antonio da Costa Basto is a member of AIDA - International Association of Insurance Law, as well as a member of the General Council of PEOPIL - Pan European Organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers and its representative for Portugal.
He is also a member of APIL - Association of Personal Injury Lawyers.
Lawyer Antonio da Costa Basto is author for Portugal of the national report on 'Personal Injury Compensation in Europe' (Kluwer, 2003), a comparative study involving 18 jurisdictions, as well as author for Portugal of the national report 'Fatal Accidents and Secondary Victims', (xpl law/xpl publishing, 2005), a comparative study involving 18 jurisdictions.
